How It All Began

I began writing in 2002.  An idea for a story, (Nine Lives) began a few years before that.  I had no writing background or training and the few people I knew that did write did not like or want my story.  After a little persuasion from my wife, I started an outline that quickly became a full novel.
After Nine Lives, I continued writing because I found, much to my surprise, I enjoyed writing. I enjoy putting a scene and characters together on paper.  A few years back, I spoke to another writer on-line and we agreed that writing can induce a euphoric feeling very much like a Runners High.  I knew at that point I found my true life’s work.                                                                                                                  Before I begin writing, I usually have gone over scenes, plots and twists many times and I am very interested to see how it turns out.
What I am trying to create is realistic characters in realistic situations.  I know for myself, if I can’t identify with the characters, I loose interest in a story.  Another aspect is, although I write in the paranormal supernatural genre, I try to keep a strong sense of reality within the story.  I think it makes the surrealistic parts stand out that much more.  One of the more difficult parts to writing is putting abstract ideas into words.  Another part of the writing process that I find mysterious is the marketing end.  Both have an aloof quality to them in that you are trying to present an idea or feeling to another person; make them feel what you feel.  My greatest joy or accomplishment is when I hear from a person who has read my story and enjoys it at the same emotional level as when I wrote it.  Being able to pass along those feelings are very much magic.
Stephen King and Anne Rice are two writers that I try to keep in mind when I write.  I try to match or pull my writing up from what I consider ordinary to a level that these two authors have done throughout their careers.   If you purchase my book, I want you to do so because you like my writing and continue to follow what I do.
If I had a chance to sit down and talk to an author it would be Edgar Allen Poe.  I enjoy non-conventional people and he falls into that category to the extreme.
I am finalizing my second novel, The Thirteenth Sign and getting it ready to be edited.  I am hoping to have it in print before the end of the year.  It is also a paranormal mystery that is character driven as is written in the first person.  The Thirteenth Sigh is the first novel in a series I am writing.
Typically I write very early in the morning.  My mind is very busy at that hour and I let it go fee or it gets tangled in its own leash!

  1. Wow, Frank! Great-looking blog! Writing IS tremendously fulfilling, isn't it? It doesn't matter when in your life you start. If you've got a story it will have to break out at some point.

I've been at it forever, though. Having few other skills, writing is how I got through college, work applications, etc. But big stuff like novels had to wait for the kids to grow up and leave.

So you use outlines? That's always recommended. I can't do it for fiction, though. Once I get a story going, it takes off on it's own and I'm lucky if I can keep up with it.

    Keep on blogging! -Mary
