The Hero Image Has Left The Building

Today my son shattered any illusion that I may have held that he believed his father was super human.  We were watching the newer version of Godzilla with Matthew Broderick when he said, “Hey Dad, that guy,” referring to Broderick in a cheap, pleather beret, “kinda reminds me of you.”  When I pumped him for more information, he told me, “I dunno, just the way he acts, I guess.”

I was stunned into silence.
Honestly, this is not the role model I would have wanted to portray to my son.  Not even the top ten! There are no cool lines for this character whatsoever in this film!   Broderick, although saves the day in the end, spends most of the movie moping around being…well…geeky.
Gaaaa!
I would have taken a throw away role in Aliens, one of the ones who gets munched up in the first forty minutes of the film but, no.  I get Broderick!
My son is fifteen years old to boot so it’s not as if my image is going to sore to great heights in the next five years.  Far from it buddy.  By the time he’s out of college, I’ll be lucky to be saddled with the image of a regular on a Progressive insurance ad.
Take this lesson from me, Fatherhood sucks!
